21 dogs found “in great distress” in a dwelling

Alerted in particular by neighbours, the services discovered on the spot a distress of an unsuspected magnitude, mixing “human misery” and “animal”, describes the SPA (Society for the protection of animals) of Capbreton, called to recover and take care of a twenty Belgian shepherds.

“Fights, hunger, dogs become unmanageable and rule the roost”

The gendarmerie and the Dax prosecutor’s office refuse to comment for the time being. At this point, the case is in the process of being brought to court.

“The nightmare has begun”

On Wednesday May 11, the SPA Côte Sud-Ouest described on its Facebook page the “dramatic conditions” of this intervention. “When we arrived on the scene, we had no idea what we were going to find. 21 dogs in great distress and 1 deceased. This family, with young children, a mother expecting a new baby, lived with their dogs. This family let themselves be overwhelmed, ”says the shelter. According to our information, the children were in school.

The SPA presents “the story as we know it to date”: “The Mechelen escaped during her heat in full confinement, she came back full. People tried to give away the puppies without success since, at that time, it was impossible to move. The dogs grew up and it became impossible for them to find adoptive families. Then the neighborhood problems begin. »

“To avoid trouble, the family kept them all indoors, that’s when the nightmare started. Lack of means, lack of time with babies, the family cannot cope. Dogs grow up and breed. Fights, hunger, dogs become unmanageable and rule the roost. Destruction, excrement cleaning impossible, the family is afraid and gives up, ”continues the SPA, which published on Leetchi alongside a call for donations a photo of the interior of the home.

The SPA says it is “used to complicated situations, but this was really unthinkable”. According to the organization, the family would have appealed to associations in recent months, “without success”. “The dogs are malinois and no one can take care of them,” she explains.

“Today we have to deal with very thin animals, they are about ten kilos short each. They are parasitized, injured – surgeries following infected wounds will be necessary – they have ear infections, and many other health concerns are to be expected”, adds the Capbreton SPA, which calls for solidarity: “ We really need help in order to be able to carry out all the treatments without any restrictions. 21 dogs at once is very heavy. »
