Alps: the wolf kills a patou dog in the night

the essential
A patou dog who was watching a herd was killed by a wolf in the Pormenaz mountain pasture, near Servoz in Haute-Savoie.

To protect their herds from attacks by predators such as wolves or bears, shepherds have several tools at their disposal: human help, enclosures or patou dogs. In the Prmenaz mountain pasture in Haute-Savoie, the thousand sheep are herded every evening this summer, an assistant shepherd assists the shepherd and three defense dogs protect the animals. Clearly this is no longer enough.

During the night of Thursday to Friday, one of the dogs was killed. According to the first elements of the investigation, the patou left the herd to repel one or more wolves. The animal was equipped with a spiked collar. This equipment did not prevent the wolf from biting him. The dog was partly killed by strangulation.

The shepherd discovered the remains of his animal on Friday morning around 7 a.m. He had heard no noise in the night. “Even the members of the French Office for Biodiversity indicate that an attack on a dog is rare”, explains the shepherd Zian Blondaz to the Dauphine Libere.

The presence of one or more wolves in the area is confirmed. In the neighboring mountain pasture of Moëde les Ayères, a dozen attacks have already taken place since the beginning of the year. “It does not bode well for the rest of the summer”, comments the shepherd. So what solutions to implement? Meaner dogs? For the shepherd, it is hardly compatible with the passage of hikers in the mountains. His solution: allow defensive shots.

The Alps are not the only massif confronted with the presence of the wolf. 200 breeders from the Pyrenees mobilized in Lourdes, Saturday morning, against the regular attacks of sheep recently in the Hautacam sector. One of the shepherds claims that the animal even attacked a cow last Tuesday in the Ardiden sector.
