Dogs have a little-known way of expressing their joy at finding their master, and it’s adorable

According to a study, dogs express their joy at finding their master in a strange way: by crying!

Your dog may have greeted you with a wagging tail or a bark before, but according to science, your pet shows joy in other ways too. And it is rather surprising. According to a recent study, published on August 22, 2022 by the journal Current Biology, dogs cry when they see their master coming. Yes, you read that right.

tears of joy

To carry out this study, the scientists measured the quantity of tears produced. How ? Using the Schirmer test which consists of placing a strip under the eye. This measures the amount of tears. The researchers thus took as a point of comparison a base level raised when the dog was in its usual environment, in the presence of its owner, as indicated by the Huffington Post. And the result is stunning: after several hours of separation, the amount of tears increased “significantly in the minutes following the reunion of the dog with its owner”.

One of the authors of the study commented on this finding: “We had never heard of pets shedding tears in happy situations, like reuniting with their owner,” Takefumi Kikusui of Azabu University said in a statement.

The study also reveals that these are not tears of sadness but of joy. Indeed, scientists have observed during the reunion of a dog with his master an increase in the love hormone, oxytocin. Lovely, isn’t it?
