Dol-de-Bretagne: the trauma of two walkers violently bitten by a dog

It was a beautiful day in June. Ideal for a bike ride on country roads.

Mireille (assumed first name) had gone riding with her companion around Dol-de-Bretagne (Ille-et-Vilaine). An accomplished sportswoman, the very young retiree swims every day and runs very regularly.

German shepherd jumps on him

That day, she did not imagine having to put her daily life as an athlete on hold for long weeks. The fault of a dog who suddenly attacked her as the couple quietly crossed a hamlet of Dol.

the German shepherd popped up from the other side of the road to bite her hard on the calf. It will be his cries that will eventually scare away his four-legged assailant. A neighbour, a firefighter, will take care of first aid on site before Mireille is transferred to the hospital.

Skin graft

His calf is then nothing more than a pile of flesh open to the open air. A skin graft will be needed. With the key two beautiful scars of several centimeters.

“She was very athletic. It’s finish “

In front of Court of Saint-Malo this Tuesday, June 7, 2022, his lawyer Pierre Stichelbaut is trying to make the judge understand the serious consequences of this bite.

For two months, a nurse came to her house every day to give her care. My client was very athletic. It’s all over. She still feels the pain of it today.”

Mireille has also developed a terrible fear of dogs. Since the two-year-old facts, she has been consulting a psychologist. His doctor prescribed him treatment with antidepressants.

“When I hear barking, I’m scared”

A few minutes later, before this same court, it was another retiree who came to testify at the bar. She too was walking quietly in the countryside of Dol-de-Bretagne. Passing by the same hamlet, a German shepherd-type dog (the investigation could not prove that it was indeed the same animal, Editor’s note) attacked him by surprise. The walker was violently bitten in the hand and thigh. By removing his fangs, the dog left behind him “a deep wound” revealing raw tendons.

The victim, barely containing her tears, told the court how the attack had changed her.

“I was very shocked. I who have always loved animals, I am afraid today when I hear a dog barking”.

“What if it had been a child”

If she filed a complaint, she said, it was not for the use of her hand that she “recovered 80%” but “because I was attacked in a frequented place. Families come to walk there with their babies. Children learn to ride a bike here. If a child had been grabbed by the throat like I was bitten on the hand, he wouldn’t be here today”.

4 months suspended and confiscated animal

We will learn during the hearing that the German shepherd clearly identified during the first attack was not vaccinated against rabies and that he had already “pinched” another walker according to his owner, who was absent in court. We will also learn that the mayor had issued an order requesting a behavioral examination of the dog.

The court sentenced the owner of the animal to 4 months suspended sentence for involuntary injuries. Justice confiscates his German shepherd and prohibits him from owning a new animal for five years.
