It is well known, the avocado is a fruit with many virtues. According to the conclusions of a new study, eating one a day for six months would notably reduce cholesterol levels.
Besides being good, avocados have many health benefits. According to a new study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, eating one a day could lower cholesterol levels.
To reach this conclusion, the researchers combed through the data of 1,000 people, either overweight or obese, for six months. Among them, half were instructed to eat an avocado every day. The others, they continued their usual diet and were asked to limit their consumption of avocado, no more than two per month. Fat in the abdomen and around several other organs was accurately measured by MRI before and at the end of the study.
And the results have been more than encouraging. “It’s positive because eating the extra calories from avocados didn’t impact body weight or abdominal fat and it slightly lowered total cholesterol”said Joan Sabaté, a professor at the Loma Linda University School of Public Health.

A better overall diet
The study also found that daily consumption of avocados improved participants’ overall diet quality by eight points on a 100-point scale. “This is important because we know that a higher quality diet is associated with a lower risk of several diseases, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers”explained Kristina Petersen, assistant professor of nutritional sciences at Texas Tech University.
Faced with this conclusion, the researchers said that in the future, they would continue to analyze the data from the study. In particular, they would like to know how the participants incorporated avocados into their diets and whether any differences will be observed based on how they ate them.
