The labor shortage also affects the restaurants at Montreal Pierre-Elliott-Trudeau airport. The North American company HMS Host tries to recruit new employees by holding a job fair.
At gate 25 of the airport, two members of HMS Host attempt to persuade passers-by to become employees of their group. This company owns 17 restaurants in the terminal. The recruitment problem is present in all the airports where they are in Canada and the United States.
Since the pandemic, HMS Host has lost many staff who have decided to leave the restaurant business. The company had to temporarily close restaurants and reduce opening hours. To date, only one of their restaurants is still closed.
The St-Hubert, Burger King and Starbucks are part of their properties. They are missing nearly 100 employees to operate as before the pandemic. They need cashiers, servers, dishwashers and baristas.
To attract future employees, the company increased all salaries by 15%. Depending on the position, the hourly rate varies between $16 to $23 per hour. There are also perks like free parking, a public transit discount, and dining discounts.
In catering, the airport can be less attractive for employees, unlike those located in the city center. “At the airport, it’s the clientele that attracts people. Those who go on a trip are happy and it makes the job more pleasant”, explains Carlos Dos Santos from HMS Host.
“You see a lot of people travelling, leaving and coming back every day. We don’t get bored here and we like the creamy coleslaw,” says an employee of the St-Hubert restaurant at the airport. HMS Host hopes to receive job applications on their website to fill their many available positions.
