The Green Justice Foundation organized on the sidelines of the World Social Forum which took place between May 01 and May 6 in Mexico City a panel under the theme: Management of natural resources and renewable energy projects in the Moroccan Sahara: positive impacts on the local population.
This panel was attended by lawyers and experts from Latin America and civil society actors from the southern provinces who all insisted on the positive impact of the use of natural resources on the southern provinces. Sud, Media24 learns from participants.
the lawyer Brazilian Lucas de Souza Ferronato highlighted the kingdom’s achievements in structuring projects and in the field of renewable energies by highlighting the fact that many countries have natural resources but do not benefit the local population, unlike Morocco, is an example to follow in this area.
the lawyer Colombian Andres Leonardo Sanjuán lawyer at the Bar of Bogota and expert in environmental and energy law highlighted the fact that the region has enormous potential for renewable energy projects.
Mourad ElAddiPresident of the Green Justice Foundation stressed that the Polisario cannot claim rights over the natural resources of the Moroccan Sahara since it has no legal legitimacy given that it does not have democratically elected institutions and that the the only representatives of the Sahrawi people are the parliamentarians and elected municipal officials chosen during the last elections organized by the Kingdom of Morocco last September.
In a working document of the services of the European Commission on the benefits for the population of the Sahara of the extension of tariff preferences to products originating in the Moroccan Sahara, we can read that Morocco has spent on infrastructure projects and renewable energies more than the benefits it can derive from its natural resources.
The panel also saw the intervention of Boussif Limam business leader and associative actor who highlighted the opportunities in entrepreneurship for young people in the Dakhla region as well as Safia Rguibi head of the attractiveness center within the regional investment center in Laayoune who presented, with supporting figures, the achievements of the region in terms of projects and the platforms for welcoming and supporting investors.
