After the controversies around the death of a giraffe and possible behavioral problems in animals in the Amneville Zoo (Moselle), a demonstration in front of the park is organized on Saturday, May 28, 2022to 2 p.m..

Behind this call for mobilization, we find Jérémy Bellet. The actor and model knows the Moselle zoo well since he launched a petition in 2019 against the show Tiger World.

Not anti-zoo, he wants to highlight a “dysfunction of the park”

Contacted by Lorraine Newshe explains from the outset that he is not against this type of animal park: “I am not not anti-zoo, they participate in the preservation of species and I am not suing the Amnéville zoo. It was the first zoo to launch a holographic show, the idea is great, but what about animal welfare? “.

When the parks reopened in 2020, I returned to the Amnéville zoo. We feel through a window the distress of the animals, it is unbearable. At the time, the animals were prostrate, the pink flamingos waded through their excrement. I am not anti-zoo but I am against these places which I consider to be places of death.

However, he explains that he gave the new management a chance, but that today the Amnéville zoo continues to cause “controversy every six months”: “I have never seen such misfortune elsewhere. An animal is not cheating. When 50 people send us videos of the same scene on different days where the animals are prostrate, there is a small problem”.

Regarding the accidental death of the giraffe, Jérémy Bellet admits that there may be “errors, sometimes things go wrong” but through his gathering that he wants ” peaceful“, he wishes to “put forward a huge park malfunction and asks for greater transparency with the public on the investigations carried out.

On social networks, his call to protest garnered more than 2,300 shares.

“It is not because we film them at a time that it is misfortune”

For its part, the Amnéville zoo had reacted to the accusations launched by animal protection associations, namely PAZ and Animal Code.

Near Lorraine NewsAlexis Maillot, veterinarian at the park, had refuted the accusations of stereotypy in lynx, first of all: “They are real janitors. At certain times, they are in front of the bay windows. […] When we speak of stereotypy, it is a locomotor loop where the animal retraces its steps. For the lynx, this was not the case”.

A similar phenomenon had been noted in a polar bear by the associations. According to Alexis Maillot, this is Henk who was filmed in “a short sequence where he was not interacting with a trainer or another animal”.

Polar bears are very sensitive to their environment and need constant stimulation. In which case, they can develop behaviors – which do not necessarily designate suffering – but which are on the contrary behaviors of self-stimulation.

This self-stimulation would have originated in his old park. The veterinarian assures that the zoo has given itself the means to respond to it, in particular by creating an additional caretaker post dedicated to polar bears. “It’s not because we film them at a time that it’s bad luck,” he said.

A “regrettable” accidental death

Regarding the death of the giraffe, Alexis Maillot had confirmed the death of the animal which occurred in the afternoon of April 20.

“We feed the giraffes with hoisted baskets. [Dans ce cas présent]it seems that he got his horn stuck in the basket, he panicked and he fell, ”said the professional.

But the animal fell in a place where its head ended up lower than the body.

The vets sedated the animal and tried to move it “but in the maneuver, the juices from the rumen [premier estomac des ruminants, Ndlr] came up to the head and asphyxiated the giraffe. So she unfortunately died of suffocation due to the fall, the head having found itself lower than the body”, details the veterinarian before specifying that “it is absolutely regrettable”.
