Six months suspended sentence and 5,000 euros in damages. This is what a 40-year-old living in Reyrieux, Ain, was sentenced to for shooting cats between 2018 and 2021.

Identified last December, he admitted to being the author of a dozen rifle shots, three of which resulted in the death of the felines.

He was tried on Tuesday June 28 at the Bourg-en-Bresse court for “abuse or acts of cruelty to domestic animals with a weapon”.

“Exasperated” by the presence of cats in his educational garden

The man explained that he was “exasperated by the presence of cats” in his educational garden, “up to twelve at the same time, with droppings everywhere”, reports Progress. He also claims that he had tried everything to scare them away before using his firearm.

In January, a petition was posted online by one of her neighbors, whose cat had been shot. She asked that the respondent be given an “exemplary sentence”. More than 50,000 people had signed.

Six months later, it goes without saying that the verdict leaves a bitter taste to the civil parties. “I am disappointed. He gets away with a six-month suspended sentence, I expected more, he’s a notorious repeat offender. He showed no regrets, ”testifies this same neighbor to our colleagues.
