Organic food: production is increasing… but the French consume less of it

Organic food no longer has the wind in its sails. The figures for last year attest to this: sales of organic fruit and vegetables fell by 11%. So, for some farmers who had made this choice, it’s a cold shower.

Thus, in the Normandy bocages, Yves Sauvaget raises his 80 dairy cows. In 2010, after 15 years in the business, he launched into 100% organic: “No fertilizers, no herbicides, no pesticides”, he explains in front of the TF1 8 p.m. camera, in the report at the top of this article. An ecological decision, which pays off at first: he sells his milk at a higher price and sells stocks easily. But since 2021, its activity has run out of steam and prices have fallen. “For 2021, the drop in prices that we have suffered, added to the drop in aid for maintaining organic farming, is 20,000 euros less. We are able to spend a year like that, but not two”he points out.
