Kayo Nakamura75, lives in IIzuka in the prefecture of Fukuoka in Japan. In 2010, she was at home when a stray dog was violently hit by a truck. She had run to his aid. The animal was very hard hit in the hind legs.

With his daughter Kozue Kuwano, 46, she had taken the canine to a first clinic, where they had been told that there was nothing to be done to save her. They then went to another veterinarian. The latter explained to them that he could operate on him, but that his chances of regaining the use of his limbs were slim. He also told them that the operation was expensive (500,000 yen, or around 3,500 euros) and had even suggested that they have him euthanized.

For Kayo Nakamura, who had survived a heart attack a few weeks earlier, letting the dog die was out of the question. She had therefore been operated on, and after a month of convalescence, she was discharged from the veterinary clinic. During her hospitalization, the septuagenarian visited her daily. A very strong bond had been established between her and the animal.

The female dog she had called Ume-chan, gradually began to walk again. A small miracle for her who had her pelvis and her 2 back legs fractured. Adopted by her rescuer, she began a whole new life.

The guardian angel of school children for a decade

Kayo Nakamura used to volunteer to watch over the children who crossed the street near her home to go to school. Ume-chan saw her at work from the veranda and kept barking to make her understand that she wanted to join her. His mistress then decided to let her accompany him on his mission.

For about 10 years, the dog has been faithful to the post. She stands at the intersection, held on a leash by her owner, and both of them make sure that the schoolchildren make their journey safely to join their classes. Students who adore her and who always say hello to her, to which she responds by wagging her tail.
