Sextape affair: Karim Benzema renounces his appeal

Six years after the fact, it’s the end of the sextape affair. Karim Benzema will not come to explain himself before the Versailles Court of Appeal (Yvelines), on June 30 and July 1, as planned. He is therefore definitively sentenced to a one-year suspended prison sentence, accompanied by a fine of €75,000 as well as €80,000 to be paid to Mathieu Valbuena for non-pecuniary damage, as announced by the Actu78 site this Friday.

A conviction handed down by the Versailles Criminal Court on November 24, for complicity in blackmail. “Karim Benzema got personally involved with insistence in trying to convince Mathieu Valbuena to meet his trusted man”, had then explained the court. The new lawyer for “KB9”, Me Hugues Vigier, however, rejects any admission of guilt on the part of the favorite for the next Ballon d’Or France Football.

“A real weariness”

“My client is exhausted by this procedureexplains the lawyer in The Team of Saturday. This withdrawal ratifies a decision of condemnation and apparently guilt. It is a legal truth. But this is not the reality. Karim Benzema will always claim his innocence in this case and he never wanted to participate in a blackmail operation against Mathieu Valbuena. »

Me Vigier evokes “a deep sense of injustice” at his client’s, but also “a real weariness”. Karim Benzema would therefore have estimated “that this new hearing would not change anything and that he would not be judged as he should be”.

Karim Benzema is suspected of having put pressure on Mathieu Valbuena in October 2015 during a rally of the Blues in Clairfontaine so that the latter yields to blackmail in exchange for the non-dissemination of a sextape featuring him. “My client’s first point is to say: ‘I know what happened in this interview I had with Mathieu Valbuena at Clairefontaine. That’s the core of what opposes us and he knows that I have committed no offence”. »
