Sonny’s Deli, real New York sandwiches in Paris

Foodporn alert with the opening of Sonny’s Deli where you can taste real New York-style sandwiches. A favorite !

It’s our big crush street food of the season. Sonny’s Deli just opened on the sidewalk across from its big sister, Sonny’s Pizza. After delighting the 11th arrondissement with their generous pizzathe two founders Bryan Azzouzi and Jonathan Monteix come back with a 100% foodporn project which honors the great classics of New York delicacies.

Here, no Frenchified or modernized deli with refined and gourmet recipes: at Sonny’s Deli, we are on real gourmet and very, very generous recipes, that could easily be found on the streets of NYC. The Italian-American cuisine is represented there through five must-have recipes of sandwiches, made from carefully sourced products.

To do this, the two friends have burned their Air France Miles credit and have multiplied the round trips between the capital and New York to find the best addresses to draw inspiration from – Milano Market, Reginas Grocery, Fedorff, Industry Brooklyn et al. For the breadthe star ingredient of a good sandwich, they called on Bread Shop to jointly imagine a perfect bread: brioche and air just right, not too sweetnot heavy for a penny.

Among the recipes that made our heads spin was the iconic meatball sandwich (€12), with juicy meatballs made from a mixture of veal and beef and seasoned with turmeric and coriander; a thick and very tasty homemade tomato sauce and a good taste of parmigiano; but also the carmine sandwich (€12), an Italian-American sandwich served cold, with layers of turkey and bresaola, peppers marinated in olive oil and large pieces of fior di latte mozzarella.

But our big crushwhich we have already gone back to eat since our first visit, it is without a doubt the Chopped Cheese Sandwich (12€) which could scare more than one, given its dose of minced meat, its very melted American cheese that drips and its large pieces of onions and red peppers that stick out. But we guarantee it, it’s our best street food discovery for a while, and it is served if generously that you will get your money’s worth.

To accompany this princely feast (of Bel-Air), we opt for a pint to the brim of iced teaof lemonade or a mixture of both – the famous Arnold Palmer, a well-known drink in the US; or for one of 3 cocktails bearing the names of 3 characters from the film Casino by Scorsese, signed Ahmed Yahi aka Midoco-founder of the Café Moderne cocktail bar and close friend of the Sonny’s team.

And for those who still have a little room left at the end of the meal, Sonny’s Deli remains in the (Italo-)American classic with its version of cannolo which is declined in three recipes – stracciatella and chocolate shavings, mascarpone and lemon/lime, and vanilla and pistachio mascarpone – but also with a little originality: a sundae regressive, twisted with a dash of olive oil and a handful of fleur de sel; a little cloud.
