The SPA in Quebec is overflowing with cats for adoption

The Society for the Protection of Animals (SPA) in Quebec is in an overflow situation after a large number of animals, especially cats, entered.

Back to face-to-face work for many, a consequence of inflation, no hypothesis has been ruled out by shelter officials to explain this overflow.

Compared to the same period last year, SPA has seen an increase of almost 15% in daily admissions.

For example, in the period from 1eh per On November 8, 122 abandoned or found animals entered the shelter, including 108 cats and 10 dogs, while 94 animals were adopted. The SPA also welcomes small animals such as rabbits.

The net population at the sanctuary increased by 28 animals during this period alone. In fact, there are as many cats coming in per day as there are leaving.

“I have about thirty cats for adoption, and at the end of the day I will have thirty more in the back room, sterilized, microchipped, wormed, ready to be adopted”, explains Félix Tremblay, general director of the SPA.

There are currently 45 animals available for adoption (8 small animals, 3 dogs and 34 cats).

“Is it inflation? I don’t think so, but it’s hard to rule it out. It’s true that an animal costs money. It’s at least $100 a month for a young, healthy animal.”

“Our hypothesis is more about people returning to work, the end of the pandemic, but that remains a hypothesis,” said Mr. Tremblay.

The SPA is asking for the public’s help to “stimulate the adoption of cats, provided such adoption is thoughtful and ethical”.

Around 2,500 animals find a new family thanks to SPA de Québec every year.
