The dog may well be man’s best friend, but in France it is the cat that is the favorite animal in the home. And since 2011, the one who reigns supreme over the hearts of the French is the Maine Coon.
Once again designated “favorite cat of the French”, the breed recorded 23,549 registrations in the LOOF file (Official Booklet of Feline Origins) in 2021, an increase of 21.06 percentage points compared to 2020. It must be said that this feline attracts as much by its particular physique as by its character.

What is the character of the Maine Coon?
Originally from Maine, in the United States, the Maine Coon is a very large cat. It easily exceeds 100 cm for more than 8 kg! Endowed with a fine face, long hair, “lynx ears” with plumes, and a rustic appearance, this feline is a giant with a tender heart. Very affectionate with his masters, sociable, he expresses himself a lot, with varied vocalizations.
This big cat is a fairly calm cat despite its large size, so living in an apartment can suit it perfectly. To make a Maine Coon happy, don’t forget to stimulate him enough. To do this, provide him with toys, perches and other cat trees. Don’t forget to brush it regularly! He loses a lot of hair throughout the year, with periods of moulting. This breed is also known to love water.

What is the lifespan of the Maine Coon?
This gentle giant unfortunately has a predisposition to develop certain diseases. Thus, it may be subject to:
- polycystic kidney disease, i.e. the development of cysts in the kidneys;
- feline hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, i.e. a thickening of the walls of the heart, progressively preventing it from fulfilling its role as a pump;
- hip dysplasia;
- spinal muscular atrophy (SMA for Spinal Muscular Atrophy). This hereditary genetic disease is caused by the degeneration of neurons responsible for voluntary and conscious movements, such as walking, running, holding the head, etc.
The Maine Coon has a lower life expectancy than other breeds, he who lives between 10 and 15 years, but more generally between 11 and 13 years.

What is the price of Maine Coon?
Given the health problems that this feline can encounter, it is very important to choose the breeder from whom you will buy your kitten. A good professional will make sure to breed only animals that do not carry genetic diseases. Your kitten will therefore have to present a negative test against hereditary diseases. The breeder will also make sure that the young cats are perfectly socialized and balanced. You will also have perfect traceability of your animal, with documents from parents and grandparents.
It will cost you from 1,200 to 2,000 euros depending on its lineage and the rarity of its color.
