Dogs are as effective as a PCR test in detecting Covid-19 patients. This is revealed by a study unprecedented in its scope, conducted by the AP-HP, associated with the National Veterinary School of Maisons-Alfort, near Paris. This study was carried out from March 16, 2021 to April 9, 2021 on 335 people. In fact, the advantage of these sniffer dogs, unlike PCR which can take several hours to analyze, is that the olfactory test is immediate. It only takes a few seconds for the dog to detect Covid-19 in a patient.

For this study, a dozen previously trained Malinois shepherds sniffed a sweat-soaked compress, which was placed under the armpits of the participants for two minutes. A total of 97% of symptomatic cases were spotted by dogs.
Soon dogs in our airports?
Even when the viral load was low, these mastiffs managed to detect the virus. “What we feared at the start was that the dogs would be able to detect patients who are symptomatic, but not asymptomatic patients. But this was not the case,” says Professor Jean- Marc Tréluyer, head of the study for the AP-HP, at the microphone of Europe 1. “All the patients who were found negative by nasal RT-PCR, were found negative by the dogs”, he adds. .
